Hall: In Finite Spaces August
21 - September 29, 2003
In Finite Spaces is a selection
of fifteen large color photographs by California
artist Doug Hall. Hall achieved considerable success in the 1970s
and 80s as a videographer, but since 1990 he has also pursued large-format color photography. His subjects are primarily interiors
and landscapes. This exhibition includes images from Brazil, Vietnam, Italy, Japan, California, and China. Strongly influenced
by 20th century critical theory, he is concerned with the issues
surrounding the spread of mass culture and bourgeois society.
The images may be taken as commentaries on globalization, urban
spectacle, and social ordering.
