David Smith: Two Into Three Dimensions
December 2000 - February 2001

David Smith was one of the most accomplished and influential 20th century sculptors and undoubtedly a key figure in the triumph of Modernism in America. This show examines the relationship between Smith's drawings and paintings and his three dimensional pieces with examples from the 1930's through the 60's. Featured among these works are the "Medals for Dishonor," a series of relief sculptures critiquing the threats to modern society with a strong reformist and anti-War message. Some potential areas of interdisciplinary activity: Modernism, Masculinity, 20th c. History, War and anti-War, WWII, European-American relations.
