Hartley: An American Modern
September - November 1998
The
exhibition Marsden Hartley: An American Modern clearly illustrated
Hartley's position at the center of the artistic and cultural
maelstrom known today as early American Modernism. Curator, Patricia
McDonald organized and circulated this retrospective of paintings
and drawings from the extensive holdings of the Weisman Art Museum
at the University of Minnesota. The show included examples of
his early post-impressionist Maine mountain scenes, pre WWI abstractions
completed in Paris and Berlin, his Provincetown experiments, the
New Mexican landscapes, still lifes from the 1920's and 1930's,
Bavarian mountain pastels, 1930's archaic portraits and late Maine
landscapes.
