Drawings from the Collection of Alfred Moir
September
6 - November 18, 2001
This exhibition
includes 76 drawings collected by the noted scholar of Baroque
painting (and former member of the Tulane/Newcomb faculty), Alfred
Moir. The bulk of these drawings are Italian from the period between
1500 and 1800. There are also French, Dutch, Flemish, German,
Austrian, English, Russian, and Spanish examples. The subject
matter varies, but recurring themes include the representation
of the human figure, an engagement with antiquity, religious imagery
and narrative, the position of the artist in society, Carnivals
and Civic Festivals. A number of leading artists including the
Tiepolos, Pietro da Cortona, and Simone Vouet are represented.
