Beyond the Mountains: Contemporary American Landscapes
December 2, 1999 - February 20, 2000

It can be argued that for the better part of this century, the American landscape was considered outmoded, outdated, and conceptually exhausted. Nonetheless, it has remained part and parcel of the collective American identity. The immeasurable vastness and awesome power of 19th Century American landscape paintings segued into the more intimate and individual landscapes of the 20th Century. Where time and place separate the artists, the subject matter remains the same. There is a sense of familiarity and the acknowledgement that landscape painters share a common history. However, in the 20th Century the idea of place and the characterization of that place is far more important today than any singular or unified stylistic direction. Each artist in this exhibition chose to make use of their individual point of view to interpret their subject; landscape paintings is now an independent choice.
