True Grit: Seven Female Visionaries Before Feminism
January 9 - February 15, 2004

An exhibition of painting, sculpture and drawing made between 1951 and 1975 by seven female artists whose work exudes both an undiluted purity and an unvarnished toughness; when viewed collectively, this compilation assumes a remarkable historical and cultural importance. True Grit surveys the varied, seminal oeuvres of these artists from both coasts, all of whom were making radical art before the term "feminism" had even entered the cultural vernacular. The heroines are: Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Jay DeFeo, Claire Falkenstein, Nancy Grossman, Louise Nevelson, and Nancy Spero. The idiomatic eccentricities of these artists make any classification of them difficult and imperfect. Indeed, it is their very ungroupability that creates the character of the ensemble. They are among the best of their generation and have made bodies of work that are absorbing, lasting, and hugely influential.

Organized by the Mills College Art Museum, Curated by Katherine B. Crum.
Circulated by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions (CATE), Los Angeles, CA.
